Tips to Effectively Have Your Voice Heard by Your Representative

We all want to be heard and with today’s technology it’s really not that hard to be heard. Did you visit a restaurant and absolutely love the food and you want to share that with friends? You post it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Want to give a family update? Write a blog. Looking to give friends a play-by-play of your weekend? Post your photos to Snapchat. But is digital and social media as effective when communicating with your representatives?

Is social media a good place to start?

Absolutely! Social media is great for generating awareness with other constituents when it comes to issues but is your Congress member really paying attention to your Facebook comment? They may be, but odds are they aren’t looking too closely. Outside of the harassing comments, their staff is most likely not taking note of what you’re saying online.

Why don’t they take a look at what’s being said online?

Posting digitally is one of the easiest and most natural forms of communication for people these days. So if their office is inundated with tweets, comments and emails, it’s no wonder they can’t get to them all, even if they are trying to do so.

So what’s really effective?

Picking up the phone and giving your representative a call! This a guaranteed way to speak to an actual staff member and voice your concern. Think about it this way, you can’t hear a comment being made or a tweet sent in but you do hear the phone ring. If you hear the phone ringing off the hook all day, you can assume that the issue is being heard.

So what can I use social media for?

Just like you want to spread the message about your brand new pup, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., is a great way to generate awareness about an issue. Encourage people to not only share it themselves but to make the phone calls to their representatives for maximum impact.

In Person Makes a Difference, Too.

Is your representative hosting a town hall meeting or rally? This is a great place to have your voice heard. Gather a group of people who support what you’re working towards and let your representative know. This makes for a situation that can’t be ignored.

While there may be more effective methods when it comes to communicating with your representatives, remember, any communication is better than none. No matter what you’re doing, doing something can put you ahead of the game. What are some effective ways you’ve communicated with your representatives?
