Starting your recovery can be a challenging task as you might not know where to start. Most people probably don’t think that they need help recovering and can just do it themselves. However, in most cases, that is not true. There are important steps that you can take to make a full recovery whether it be from a sports injury or even a major surgery.
Starting Physical Therapy
The first step to jumpstart your recovery is starting physical therapy. Physical therapy is important because it will help strengthen your muscles that are associated with the injury that you had, or it can help with addressing scar tissue, pain, strength and range of motion from a surgery that you just had. Also, when starting physical therapy, it is important to find a therapist that you can spend a lot of time with as you will be with them for a while. You wouldn’t want to have one that you don’t like and then have to spend a plethora of time with them.
Be Consistent with Your Attendance
At your first physical therapy appointment, they will work with you to determine the frequency and duration that the sessions should be that works well with your schedule and will give you the best outcome. Once that is determined, it is your responsibility to keep up with them in order to get the most out of your experience. Skipping sessions can set you back in your journey and will make your recovery longer and possibly harder.
Do Your Exercises at Home
Most people in physical therapy are not able to attend every day due to busy schedules, financial issues, etc. Therefore, your physical therapist will most likely send you home with a list of exercises for you to do at home to continue to make progress. Only doing 2-3 hours of physical therapy will not undo countless hours of pain that you had. This is one of the most important steps in your recovery.
Continue Physical Therapy After Being Discharged
Practicing your physical therapy even after you are discharged is important as you don’t want to undo all the hard work that you put in. You don’t have to do it as often as you had been but just doing the at-home exercises every once in a while can make sure that your muscles stay pain-free.
Some people might not know where to start when it comes to recovery from an injury or surgery. By following these simple tips, it will help you recover the best you can. These tips will also help you get back to what you love doing in no time.
