CMS Transmittal 2457 Dated 4/27/12: Therapy Caps & Physician NPI Reporting

April 27, 2012 - Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released transmittal 2457 dated April 27, 2012 with an effective and implementation date of October 1, 2012.  This transmittal addresses the creation of the manual medical review process for therapy services reaching the $3,700 thresold effective October 1, 2012; however, it does not provide any details for how the process will be handled. This transmittal also addresses the temporarily application of the therapy caps (and related provisions) to the therapy services provided in an outpatient hospital settings on/after October 1, 2012 and on/before December 31, 2012. Also effective on October 1, 2012, suppliers and providers are required to report the NPI of the physician, or nonphysician practitioner responsible for reviewing the therapy plan of care on the beneficiary's claim.
